The annual Irish Media Golf Cup is going north for the first time after a team representing Belfast media claimed the honours at Powerscourt Golf Club this week.

Press Association reporter David Young lifted the trophy in one of the most competitive finishes seen in the annual event. Belfast won by a single point from the Irish Mail, who were defending champions. A team representing tabloid newspapers, Red Top Allstars, finished a close third followed by TV3 in fourth place.

A record 10 teams competed in the prestigious event which is hosted jointly by Powerscourt Hotel and Resort and the adjacent golf club at Enniskerry, Co Wicklow.

Speaking at the awards dinner at Powerscourt Hotel,  General Manager David Webster said they were delighted to host the event jointly with the golf club. “This was a neck and neck battle which went down to the last green. We are pleased to be associated with this annual event and to host the players at the awards dinner at Powerscourt Hotel. It has been a great opportunity of showcasing together with our friends at the golf club what is on offer at Powerscourt overall.”

Powerscourt Golf Club general manager  Bernard Gibbons said: “There was a very high standard of competition from all of the teams over the challenging West Course. We look forward to welcoming them back again next year.”

The other teams which competed were: RTE, Newstalk, Independent Broadcasters,  Irish Independent, Irish Times and Sunday World
